How to Test Used PC Components Before Selling (Complete Checklist)

How to Test Used PC Components Before Selling (Complete Checklist)

Flipping PCs is only profitable if your builds actually work. Nothing kills your reputation faster than selling a system that crashes, overheats, or has a dead RAM stick you missed.

Here's the testing checklist I use before every flip.

CPU Stress Test

Run Prime95 or Cinebench R23 for at least 15 minutes. Watch temperatures with HWMonitor or Core Temp.

  • Temps should stay below 85°C under load
  • If it's thermal throttling, you've got a cooler or paste issue — fix it before selling
  • Any crashes or blue screens during stress = bad CPU or unstable overclock

RAM Testing

MemTest86 is non-negotiable. Boot from USB, let it run for at least one full pass.

  • Even one error means the stick is bad
  • Test each stick individually if you have multiple
  • Don't skip this — bad RAM causes the most mysterious crashes and returns

GPU Testing

Run FurMark or 3DMark for 10-15 minutes.

  • Watch for artifacts (weird colored pixels, lines, flickering)
  • Monitor temps — anything above 90°C under sustained load is a concern
  • Check that all display outputs work (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.)

Storage Health

Use CrystalDiskInfo to check drive health.

  • Look for "Caution" or "Bad" status
  • Check reallocated sector count — anything above 0 is a red flag for HDDs
  • For SSDs, check the percentage of life remaining
  • Run a quick benchmark with CrystalDiskMark to verify read/write speeds match the spec

Power Supply

The PSU is the hardest component to test without specialized equipment, but you can still check basics:

  • Listen for coil whine or clicking sounds under load
  • Check all voltage rails with HWMonitor (should be within 5% of spec)
  • If the system randomly shuts off under load, suspect the PSU first

Boot and BIOS

  • Verify it POSTs and reaches BIOS without issues
  • Check that the BIOS recognizes all installed components
  • Do a clean Windows install and verify all drivers load correctly
  • Run Windows Update and make sure no error codes pop up

The Quick Checklist

Before listing any flip, run through this:

  1. MemTest86 — 1 full pass minimum
  2. Prime95 — 15 minutes, watch temps
  3. FurMark — 10 minutes, watch for artifacts
  4. CrystalDiskInfo — check all drives
  5. Test all USB ports, audio jacks, display outputs
  6. Clean Windows install and update
  7. Verify WiFi/Bluetooth if applicable

Why This Matters for Profit

Skipping tests to save 30 minutes can cost you hours in returns and negative reviews. Every PC you sell is your reputation.
